Empowering Anna's Journey to Recovery After Abuse

Anna sought help from Llamau through the IRIS programme after revealing to her GP the distressing harassment inflicted by her abusive ex-partner. Her ex had subjected her to physical, emotional, sexual and financial abuse, persistently stalking her even post-separation. Financial hardships and his contact regarding their daughter left Anna feeling trapped and powerless.

This renewed harassment, orchestrated through their daughter, re-traumatised Anna and strained their relationship. After enduring years of torment, she felt she couldn't go on, even contemplating ending her life if not for her caregiving responsibilities.

Anna's safety became paramount. Through IRIS her Llamau support worker and GP partnered with the Primary Mental Health Team to ensure her well-being and rule out self-harm plans. Llamau arranged counselling and mediation to help Anna mend her relationship with her daughter, despite the challenging circumstances of her living with the ex-partner.

Six months of tailored counselling and support produced a remarkable transformation. Anna learned the abuse was not her fault, gaining a newfound sense of safety, confidence, and positivity.

Anna credits her survival to the unwavering support she received. This case underscores the enduring impact of abuse, emphasising the need for ongoing support even years after a relationship ends. Anna was referred to another service, with a commitment to stand by her and others facing similar challenges.
